Lots of people use popular ringtones to make a statement about who they are. When someone calls you and your cellphone plays your favorite tunes, this is a good way to make you smile and make the world view you in a different manner.

But ring tones have some very practical uses as well. For one thing, any unique ringtone that you select will increase the chances that you will be able to identify your cell phone ringing in a crowd. If you just use the ordinary ringtone that came with your cellphone, how many times have you heard that ring tone and reached for your phone, only to find out that some else's phone is actually ringing? In other words, someone else has the same default ringtone you have.

You can certainly solve that problem by just getting a new ringtone. Don't select any of the default ring tones that come with the phone. Instead, get a ring tone that no other people own so you can be certain it is your phone that is ringing.

Another pragmatic use is in having alternate ringtones for different callers. Suppose you are in one place and your phone is in another. If you only have a single ring tone, you can't know if you should trot and get your ringing mobile phone or not. But with one ringtone for your husband, one for your Dad, one for your annoying friend who never stops calling, you will always know whether it is necessary to make the effort.

So go ahead and get some ring tones that you like to hear. These can save you some hassle in ways you wouldn't initially suspect.
